We’re so happy to introduce a new piece by Laura Saffioti called “Eat This Now” where our esteemed foodie friend shares with us the the dishes we must try now while they’re on our favorite restaurants’ menus.
Last week, during a solo lunch at the bar, I had the best dish I have tasted all year, the heirloom tomatoes and melon salad at The Kitchen in Boulder. It was so good that when I ran into my therapist dining with her husband, I explained wildly that they must try the melon salad. The husband seemed rather smug about ordering one upon my recommendation, so I went ahead and ordered an extra one for them and sure enough they were converted.
The Kitchen’s chef, Michael Tortorello, prepares this salad with compressed Monroe Farm melons, heirloom tomatoes, sesame brittle, and basil. The dressing is a white balsamic vinaigrette punched up with fresh lime. The flavors are sweet, sour, and nutty with a nice balanced texture of crunchy and soft. This uplifting salad is served on a handmade plate from HAAND, a ceramics company in North Carolina.
Monroe Organic Farm is located in Weld County, just south of Greeley. Founded in 1936, it is Colorado’s oldest organic farm and their melons alone deserve their own long essay. Buy them while supplies last at The Boulder and Longmont Farmer’s Markets.
I must go back to order the heirloom tomatoes and melon once more before October 10, when the seasonal menu changes. If you are smart, you will too. Sure, it’s early October and I too am ready to wear wool socks and bake with cinnamon. I am also trying to savor each minute of daylight and these last tastes of summer. This dish is late summer sweetness in all its glory.
